Heavy Grease Removal Techniques

Industrial-strength methods for removing stubborn grease from stovetops, hoods, and kitchen surfaces. These professional techniques tackle even the toughest baked-on grease.

What You'll Need

  • Heavy-duty degreaser
  • Baking soda
  • Dawn dish soap
  • White vinegar
  • Scraper or old credit card
  • Steel wool (for appropriate surfaces)
  • Rubber gloves
  • Microfiber cloths

Step-by-Step Guide

1

Safety First

Wear rubber gloves and ensure good ventilation. Turn off and cool all appliances completely. Remove knobs, grates, and other removable parts. Clear the area of anything that shouldn't get cleaning solution on it.

2

Initial Scraping

Use a plastic scraper or old credit card to remove loose, thick grease buildup. Scrape gently to avoid scratching surfaces. Dispose of scraped grease in trash (not down the drain where it can cause clogs).

3

Degreaser Application

Spray heavy-duty degreaser on affected areas. For vertical surfaces, spray from bottom up to prevent drips. Let sit for 5-10 minutes to break down the grease. Don't let it dry - reapply if needed.

4

Baking Soda Power

For stubborn spots, make a paste of baking soda and dish soap. Apply thickly to greasy areas. The alkaline nature cuts through grease while providing gentle scrubbing action. Let sit 15 minutes.

5

Scrub and Wipe

Use appropriate scrubber for your surface (microfiber for delicate, steel wool for tough). Scrub in circular motions. For baked-on grease, use more pressure. Wipe away loosened grease with clean cloths frequently.

6

Vinegar Rinse

Spray with 50/50 vinegar and water solution. Wipe with clean cloth. The acid cuts through any remaining grease film. Buff dry with microfiber cloth for streak-free finish. Inspect and repeat if needed.

Pro Tips

  • Heat helps: Run oven or stovetop briefly to warm grease before cleaning
  • For range hoods: Remove and soak filters in Dawn and hot water
  • Dawn dish soap is designed to cut grease - use the blue original formula
  • Steam cleaner works great for loosening baked-on grease
  • Clean grease regularly - it's much harder once it bakes on over time

Important

  • Never use steel wool on stainless steel - it scratches
  • Don't use abrasives on glass cooktops
  • Keep degreasers away from food contact surfaces until rinsed
  • Don't mix ammonia-based degreasers with other cleaners
  • Grease is extremely slippery - wipe floors immediately if spilled
